Pretenders

We play house in a flat
that isn’t ours walk a dog
we didn’t train I wiggle your tie
before work each morning kiss your left
cheek instead of your right you
refer to me as the missus ask if
I’d ever given thought to summering
or a son named Reece maybe Declan I don’t
say anything that does the trick and on the way
out one day we wave to our neighbors none
aware of what we really are city rascals
sharp as skimmer bills they ask us where
we’re off to what we think we’re doing
smiling at a time like this we say we’ve
run out of eggs and are trying to be
very normal about it
