Alice Frecknall

Knowing What I Know

You killed the family
cat by injection
when it was fifteen. Or rather,

signed the papers and kept
your hands neat. I don’t know
what day it was

you made the call, lifted
the soft weight
of her body and drove it

to a place that could
make it end, but knowing
what I know now, I imagine

the day a valley, nestled
amidst the crowd of all
those other days, and kind.
