The shape of this poem references, and pays tribute to, designs on an engraved flint flake discovered at the Kiik-Koba archaeological site in Crimea, now held at the NASU Institute of Archaeology in Kyiv, Ukraine. Carved by Neanderthals, these engravings are cited in Kindred by Rebecca Wragg Sykes (Bloomsbury, 2020, p.253) as one of the earliest-known examples of hominin cultural expression.
